Two years in prison for Ostend who put gun to father’s head

The victim is a 50-year-old man who himself informed the Ostend police at the end of November last year. He stated that his son was aggressive under the influence of drugs.

The defendant allegedly pointed the gun at his father and said he would commit suicide. He then put on a large shot of heroin. At the time of his arrest, the Ostend resident had the gas pressure pistol in question and small amounts of speed and heroin in his pocket. He has been in custody ever since.

Due to his strange behavior on the street, the defendant also ran into the lamp in June for possession of an air gun, 19 grams of speed and 10 grams of heroin. Just under a week later, the victim called the police because he was afraid of his son living at home. The man’s bed then turned out to be full of drug paraphernalia, while almost 14 grams of speed were found on his bedside table. During a similar intervention in April, the police had already discovered ammunition on a cupboard.

Change statements

The man denied that he had threatened his father with his gun. At the hearing, the victim also stated that the defendant did not put the weapon to his head. In his own words, the father had only stated this in the hope that his son would be admitted to a drug rehabilitation center. According to the judge, the father only changed his statements to protect his son. The defense asked for a sentence linked to conditions, but could also agree with a community service order.

The Ostend resident has been sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of 8,000 euros. The judge took into account, among other things, the criminal record of the defendant, who had previously been convicted of drug offenses, beatings and rebellion. In October 2020, he was also given a two-year suspended prison sentence for extortion, but that sentence was converted into an effective sentence in 2022 because he did not comply with his conditions.
