Argentine soccer world champion Alejandro “Papu” Gómez has been banned for doping. His club AC Monza announced on Friday (October 20, 2023) that he would not be allowed to play professional football for two years.

The Italian club was informed by the world association FIFA about the decision of the Spanish Anti-Doping Commission. The club management reserves the right to take further steps.

Doping drug terbutaline detected in Gomez

The active ingredient terbutaline was detected in samples from October 2022, the association said in a statement. At that time, Gómez was still playing for the Spanish top club FC Sevilla.

According to media reports, the midfielder had drunk his children’s cough syrup without first consulting with the club’s doctors.

Just moved to AC Monza a few weeks ago

Gómez won the World Cup in Qatar with the Argentine national team at the end of last year. He was the only world champion not to be called up to the national team again this year. After being under contract with Sevilla FC for around two and a half years, he moved to AC Monza in Italy just a few weeks ago.
