The Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas is known, among other things, as a poker paradise, where the World Series of Poker Winter Edition event is currently underway.
On Monday, the place made headlines for another reason, when a shark killed a 44-year-old woman in front of the Atlantis Resort. A tourist who had arrived from Boston had been paddling a good kilometer away from the beach when the beast had attacked the woman.
The lifeguard had seen the situation and left by boat to help the woman. He was able to take her to the beach, but CPR was useless. The shark had ravaged the right side of the woman’s body with such serious injuries that they took her life.
Shark attacks are rare in the Bahamas, but Monday’s tragedy was the second in a few weeks. At the end of November, a shark attacked a 47-year-old German tourist who was on a diving course. No victims were found after the attack.
Atlantis Resort is currently fully booked as poker players from around the world have arrived on the paradise island. However, guests do not dare to go into the sea to swim, because sharks have been on duty near the beach since Monday’s tragedy.
