Two people died and four were injured last Friday in a shooting incident near the F1 sanctuary Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Anna Andersson tells about it in his F1 blog On the pages of Aftonbladet.
According to Andersson, a couple of hours before Friday’s first free F1 practice, a white van stopped near the entrance of a stadium. The local police suspected that the van had previously been stolen from the northern part of the city.
When the authorities arrived to investigate the situation, a shooting incident broke out, in which one person suspected of theft and one police officer were killed. In addition, four people nearby were injured. Among them was one policeman and one taxi driver.
Despite the shocking tragedy, the F1 event was organized as planned. Over 400,000 people visited Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez during the race weekend.
Max Verstappen moved around the pit area with bodyguards. Despite the distractions, the Dutchman won the race again in spectacular style.
A nasty scene was also seen inside the motorsport sanctuary, when fans started fighting with each other in the stands. The situation calmed down only when a man outside grabbed one of the trekkers in a tight stranglehold.
– F1 told me the fan who attacked the Ferrari fans was thrown out and banned from the event for life, F1 reporter Chris Medland said on the messaging service X (formerly Twitter).
