Two people arrested during Macron’s visit to the University of Amsterdam

A man and a woman were arrested on Wednesday during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the University of Amsterdam (UvA). They ran towards Macron and shouted French slogans, a police spokesman said. They were arrested for disturbing public order and threatening. One of the two demonstrators is said to have said “on est là” just before his arrest, a song that was heard a lot during the protests against the pension reform.

On images from channel AT5 shows how a person runs towards the president, but is soon stopped by security guards. Macron visited the science faculty of the UvA together with King Willem-Alexander. A lecture by Macron in The Hague on Tuesday evening was also disrupted by demonstrators who shouted at the president from the balcony and unrolled banners. It said, among other things, that Macron would be president of “violence and hypocrisy”.

The French president arrived in Amsterdam on Tuesday for a two-day state visit, together with his wife Brigitte. On Wednesday, Macron will visit the Vermeer exhibition in the Rijksmuseum together with Rutte. Macron is under heavy fire in his own country for pushing through a pension reform, which parliament was against. There have been protests in the country for weeks.
