Two late goals: Arsenal end winless streak at Aston Villa

Gunners back on course

Arsenal FC got back on track in the championship race and achieved an important success. At Aston Villa with former Arsenal coach Unai Emery, the Gunners fought back 4-2 (1-2) on Saturday after falling behind twice and ended their series of three Premier League games thanks to a curious goal in added time without victory.

New signing Jorginho shot the ball against the post in the turbulent final phase, from where it hit Villa’s Argentinian world champion goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez in the head – own goal (90th minute +3)! Minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli (90+8) maneuvered the ball into the empty Villa goal after Martinez hadn’t run back into the goal from a corner on the other side.

Before the eyes of Hollywood star and Villa fan Tom Hanks, Ollie Watkins (5th minute) and former Liverpool professional Philippe Coutinho (31st) gave the strong hosts the lead twice. However, Arsenal equalized at Villa Park through Bukayo Saka (16′) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (61′). After Eddie Nketiah and Martin Ödegaard had missed good chances for Arsenal in the high-class game, the Londoners were still able to celebrate in the end. Bitter for Villa: Just before that, Leon Bailey had missed the chance to take the lead when Aaron Ramsdale deflected his shot to the crossbar.

Three days after the 3-1 home defeat in the catch-up game against Manchester City, Arsenal pushed their direct competitor City off the top of the table, at least for a short time. Immediately after the final whistle in Birmingham, Arsenal had 54 points after 21 games, the Citizens 51 points after the same number of games played.
