Two Iranian women arrested for not covering their hair after man smeared them with yogurt | Abroad

In Iran, two women have been arrested after being attacked by a man with yogurt, apparently because they were not wearing a hijab (headscarf). This is reported by the British public broadcaster ‘BBC’.

On a surveillance video that went viral, two female customers are approached by the man, who starts talking to them. He then grabs what appears to be a tub of yogurt off a shelf and indignantly throws it over their heads. The man is then worked out of the case by the shopkeeper.

Iranian justice says the two women were arrested for showing their hair. That is illegal if you are a woman in Iran. The man was also arrested for disturbing public order. The shopkeeper also received a warning that he should better comply with the rules on the use of the hijab.

Demonstrations

The arrests follow months of protests that have been spreading through the Islamic Republic since September following the death of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old woman died after being detained by vice squad in the capital Tehran for allegedly wearing her hijab “inappropriately”.

Since then, mainly women have taken to the streets against the mandatory wearing of the headscarf. This prohibition is often not observed, especially in the big cities. Thousands of demonstrators have already been arrested and four demonstrators have been executed since December. Amnesty International warns that even children are being tortured by the regime.

The crackdown has caused even more discontent among the population. The protests are therefore no longer just about the headscarf requirement, but about the general policy of the theocratic regime. However, the authorities are not budging for the time being: in recent weeks, security forces have taken to the streets en masse after new calls to demonstrate.

Ultimatum

Hossein Ali Haji Deligani, a hardliner in the Iranian parliament, has even issued an ultimatum to the judiciary. According to him, measures must be taken within 48 hours to put an end to breaking the rules.

On Saturday, President Ebrahim Raisi reiterated that Iranian women must wear the hijab out of “religious necessity”. Raisi was quoted several times in a report from the French news agency ‘AFP’: “The hijab is a legal matter and compliance with it is mandatory”.
