Two hundred ‘golden wedding couples’ put in the spotlight

1969 was not only the year of Lenny Kuhr, the Dolle Mina’s and the moon landing, but also the year in which 45 couples from the municipalities of Aa and Hunze got married. Today, although with a three-year delay due to the corona period, they were still put in the spotlight in the town hall of Gieten.

“Before Covid, we did this every year. I have been mayor here since 2019, but this is also the first time for me,” says Mayor Anno Wietze Hiemstra. Until 2020, the municipality of Aa and Hunze organized a day every year on which they celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the golden bridal couples. “This year we have chosen to organize four afternoons for the years 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972,” says Hiemstra.

He welcomes the guests with a speech. Hiemstra talks about the year 1969 and explains how bridal fashion changed significantly during that period: “This is not my field of expertise at all, but it seems that bridal couples from your year wore real hippie clothes. Wide dresses. A relaxed style. That was very different if you compare it to the 1950s when dresses were made of satin with lots of lace and pearls.”
