Two highways in the east of the Netherlands still (partly) closed in the aftermath of farmers’ actions | NOW

Two highways and entrances and exits in the east of the Netherlands are still (partly) closed, because there is still manure, hay and other rubbish on the road. The mess was left by farmers on Wednesday morning. On other roads in Gelderland, Overijssel and Utrecht, the mess has now been cleared and the lanes are free again.

The A1 towards Amersfoort between Voorst and the Beekbergen junction will remain closed until after the evening rush hour. A company has to remove material containing asbestos there, Rijkswaterstaat reports.

The delay between Hengelo and Apeldoorn had increased to more than an hour around 5 p.m. It is therefore better for traffic to detour via the A35, A28 and A50. Two lanes on the other side of the A1 at Voorst are closed. The delay at the end of the afternoon was already there for almost an hour.

On the A28 at Nieuwleusen between Zwolle and Groningen, traffic was on the road for about forty minutes longer around 5 p.m. Three lanes are closed there.

Furthermore, the exit of the A1 at Holten was blocked again with hay bales on Wednesday at the end of the afternoon.

Motorist drives on hay bale

Farmers’ actions started early this morning. Activists poured hay bales, car tires, rubble and manure over driveways and exits, closing entire roads.

On a drive to the A32 near Meppel-Noord, a motorist drove on a hay bale on Wednesday morning. No one was injured, but the damage to the car was extensive.

Police have not yet arrested anyone, but are trying to identify the culprits. In a joint statement, Rijkswaterstaat, the police and the security regions are calling on the farmers concerned to stop the dangerous actions.
