Three years after a serious accident that killed two people in north-west Mecklenburg, a man from the Barnim district has to answer to the district court of Wismar.

The 31-year-old Christoph R. from Brandenburg is accused of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm, as a spokeswoman for the district court said on Saturday. The process is scheduled to begin on September 6 and is initially planned to last until the end of October.

At the beginning of August 2020, the then 28-year-old drove into a car driving in front of him at high speed on the A20 near Wismar. According to the police, he was drunk.

Vanessa W. (19) and her boyfriend’s father (45) died in the completely destroyed car, both from Western Pomerania. The friend, who was also 19 at the time, survived with serious injuries.

Christoph R. was unharmed, his breath alcohol level was 2.1 per mille, so he had to give up his driver’s license. Experts investigated for months why the person who caused the accident apparently had not braked at the time.

According to an eyewitness, Christoph R. got out of the car after the accident with a bottle in his hand and shouted: “My car, my car.” He is said to have taken another bottle with a crown cap from his trunk and opened it. He only stopped drinking when the police took the bottle away from him and took him away.

Police officers let him drive on

In this context, it is also being examined whether police officers from Schleswig-Holstein could have been negligently responsible for the accident. The two officers had checked the driver near Lübeck a short time before because he had been driving in a serpentine manner, but found no alcohol influence.

According to their information, this had not shown any signs of failure. Since he refused a breath alcohol test, the officers measured the air in his BMW, but found no alcohol.

He had a clear choice of words and said that he had not slept for 48 hours. The officials ordered him to take a rest and let him drive on.

The serious accident near Wismar happened about an hour later.
