Last night, two people were killed and five others injured in an accident with a wrong-way driver on the A28, near Hooghalen in Drenthe. The wrong-way driver, a 30-year-old man from Assen, collided head on with the car of a 35-year-old woman from Leek, a police spokesperson told NU.nl.
Three other vehicles were also involved in the accident. This included the five victims who were injured.
The police received a report around 0.30 am from a wrong-way driver who was driving at high speed on the A28 from Haren. Several officers responded to the report. The wrong-way driver seemed to stop near Assen, but when police approached he ran away.
The pursuit was then started. Agents have tried to warn about a wrong-way driver, but things went wrong around Hooghalen.
The scene of the accident was investigated by police specialists. The road was closed in both directions for several hours, but has since reopened. For example, trace evidence has been carried out and witnesses have been heard.
Police are calling on witnesses to come forward. The police also calls on any dashcam images showing the wrong-way driver to be shared.
