Two days until voting week Drentse 1000: René Steenbergen enjoys drool record and choruses cycled through each other

You could say that life might be too short for bad or wrong music, but let’s be honest: sometimes it’s wonderful to blare along with a song that others think really shouldn’t be. Also called a guilty pleasure.

“And now you sure want to know my ultimate?” Steenbergen laughs. “Well, that is Especially For You from Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan”, the radio presenter confesses. Why? “Well, that’s very double. When the intro starts, you think: not that drooling record again. But a minute later I’m secretly singing along unnoticed. Secretly it’s just a very good song,” says Steenbergen.

All goodly pleasure craziness aside. Only one record can be the most beautiful. According to Steenbergen, that is God Only Knows from The Beach Boys. And that starts at the beginning, says the music lover: “That intro with that hunting horn, that really gives goosebumps every time. Really the most beautiful love song ever made.”

Listening carefully to the song of the Californian music group, it actually seems quite a simple song. Indeed, it seems so. “It really isn’t,” Steenbergen teaches. “It’s all kinds of choirs that have cycled through each other. And a text where you first think: huh, what a strange song. But oh, it’s all kinds of beautiful things mixed up.”

Drenthe, or California? In short: Skik or The Beach Boys. A hard ‘pooh’ escapes from Steenbergen’s mouth. “Yes, then I will go for The Beach Boys. It really has to be somewhere in the upper regions. But if Skik or Lohues come back to number one, then I completely agree.”
