Tunisia loses its opening World Cup game 1:5 against Sweden and immediately draws conclusions. A new coach is now taking over, but he is already well known on the World Cup stage.

The Tunisian Football Association has fired national coach Sabri Lamouchi after just one World Cup game. The trigger was the 1:5 defeat at the start of the tournament against Sweden. The Frenchman Hervé Renard takes over as his successor.

Lamouchi only took over the team in mid-January. He was the fifth national coach since January 2024. He suffered four defeats in five games. The World Cup dress rehearsal against Belgium ended 0:5, the only win came against Haiti.

Association president Moez Nassari announced on state television that Renard would “take over the management of the national team until the end of the 2026 World Cup.” Nassari added: “Renard will arrive in Monterrey on Tuesday where he will lead the first training session with the team.”

The 57-year-old Renard was fired as Saudi Arabia’s national coach in April. He has already gained a lot of experience at international level and was at the World Cup with Morocco in 2018 and with Saudi Arabia in 2022. He also previously coached Zambia, Angola and Ivory Coast.

On Sunday he is already under pressure with Tunisia in the game against Japan in Monterrey (from 6 a.m. in the live ticker on t-online). The Netherlands are waiting for the end of the group phase.
