Two bodies found in search for missing British journalist and Brazilian expert: “Tied to a tree” | Abroad

During the search for missing British journalist Dom Phillips and his traveling companion, two bodies were found in the Brazilian Amazon. The bodies were tied to a tree. It is feared that it is the journalist who has been missing for a week.

Dom Phillips (57), a British journalist who writes for ‘The Guardian’, ‘The New York Times’ and ‘Washington Post’, has been missing since Sunday 5 June. At the time, he was in a remote corner of the Brazilian Amazon where he was traveling with Bruno Araujo Pereira (41) – a specialist on indigenous peoples – as part of a book.

Two bodies were found last night. The journalist’s family has since been informed by the British embassy in Brazil. “They told us that two bodies had been found,” said Dom Philips’ brother-in-law. “He did not tell us where the bodies were found, but they were tied to a tree and had not yet been identified.”

On Saturday, the federal police of Brazil had already found a backpack, pants and shoes that probably belonged to the two missing men. According to local media, the items were found near the home of a man arrested in connection with the case. According to witnesses, he would have chased Phillips and Pereira at the river where they were last seen.

Death Threats

The journalist and the Brazilian expert were threatened before their disappearance, local organizations reported. These included death threats from miners and loggers working illegally in the Amazon region. The journalist mapped out such illegal operations several times.
