Twitter turbulence gives Mastodon renewed user boost

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The excitement over the reading restrictions on Twitter is driving more and more users to the arms of German rival Mastodon.

“It looks as if the number of active users of Mastodon has increased by 110,000 in the last few days,” wrote Eugen Rochko, the founder of the German short message service, on Monday night. “I would prefer Elon Musk to destroy his website during the work week. This isn’t the first time.”

Twitter owner Musk had limited the number of messages that users can read per day over the weekend. He wants to prevent companies like the ChatGPT maker OpenAI from tapping the information available there on a large scale in order to train their artificial intelligence (AI). Since the takeover of Twitter by the head of the electric car manufacturer Tesla in autumn 2022, users and advertisers have turned away from the US platform. Musk has repeatedly alienated her with erratic decisions.
