I Love Sint-Job is pretty much the annual highlight for the youth of Sint-Job, but for a 20-year-old young man, this year had a sour ending. “The party was over and I was still waiting with a friend for the rest of our group to go home. I saw a group of young people arguing with the security. I told them to stop and just go home. But suddenly they came after me.” The victim was first punched in the face, after which he and the first attacker ended up on the ground. In the meantime you hear the ‘cameraman’ shouting ‘come on, on cam!’. Immediately at least two more young men run up and hit the head of the victim with some striking kicks. In a short second film you hear several of the perpetrators laughing and one shouts ‘haha, dead man walking’.

A friend of the victim immediately calls the victim’s parents. Meanwhile, the young man himself is taken by ambulance to the hospital in Malle. “That phone: your son was beaten up. You never forget that,” the parents said. “When we saw him in the hospital, we were shocked, but on the other hand there was also some relief that he was not in worse condition.” Less than a day later, the parents know who is behind the facts and everything is passed on to the police, who are now fully engaged in an investigation. “Actually, we are very happy that those guys filmed it themselves”, the parents say. “Somehow, that also ended up in our son’s circle of friends. In addition, there were several witnesses who noted the number plates of the perpetrators’ cars.”

The parents take it seriously and in the meantime they have taken on master Walter Damen. Their son may hardly get anything from it, even if he hears only a fraction on the left. He also has a small fracture in the cheekbone. Fortunately, the swelling on his face and legs has almost disappeared. “And I still sleep very badly. The movie of the fight still plays in my head regularly.” His parents won’t let it go. “This laughter will and must be paid for,” the parents say. “This isn’t normal anymore, is it? Such a kick on the head: that can be deadly. And especially the fact that those perpetrators apparently really enjoy doing something like this. I’m almost convinced that it won’t be their first fact, although you can’t prove that of course. Hopefully the courts will do their job and the perpetrators will be punished.”
