Twenty projects selected for support from the Energy Transition Fund (thanks to nuclear tax) | Environment

Twenty projects that contribute to the acceleration of the energy switch can count on a budget of 25 million euros from the Energy Transition Fund. They were selected from 63 applications that responded to a call for projects. Without any accidents, the Council of Ministers gives the green light for the list today.

The Energy Transition Fund was established to support research, development and innovation in the field of the energy transition. The fund is financed by the nuclear tax that Engie Electrabel pays to keep the Doel 1 and 2 nuclear power plants open until 2025.

The annual budget of 25 million euros is specifically earmarked for the energy transition, through a call for innovative projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating the transition to renewable energy. This call for projects, the sixth already, took place from November last year to the end of January this year.

In total, 63 applications were received for a combined total of more than 70 million euros. For Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen), the high number of projects reflects the federal government’s course to accelerate the energy transition. “I am pleased with the large participation of universities and companies in this call for projects. A clear response to the ambitious policy of the federal government,” said the green minister.

Of the 20 selected projects, eight relate to “renewable energy sources in the Belgian Exclusive Economic Zone” and twelve to the theme “security of supply and grid balance”. Each project will receive a minimum of 100,000 euros and a maximum of 5 million euros.
