04 March

The second round of the 2022 Motocross World Championship will be held on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March at the Tazio Nuvolari Circuit in Mantua: 1,660 meters of sand that last winter crowned Jeffrey Herlings as World Champion in the last heat of the season. The Dutchman, injured during the photo shooting at the beginning of the season, has not yet recovered the strength to get on the saddle and compete at the highest levels. An absence, that of Herlings, accompanied by that of Romain Febvre, who was on the entry list at the British GP, while for the Mantuan round the French opted to dispel any doubts even before the start of the weekend. A golden opportunity, therefore, for Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado, who can build a tally of points ahead at the start of the season.

MXGP: Gajser against Prado

It is precisely the challenge between Tim Gajser (Honda Hrc) and Jorge Prado (Gas Gas) that has heated the spirits and made the public goose bumps back on Sunday 27 February in Matterley Basin, the first round of the season with the MXGP World Championship. A manche won each, but the Slovenian – due to the second place in Race 2 against the fourth in Race 1 of his direct opponent – shows up in Mantua with the red plate as the leader of the championship. He could be back in the fight for victory, even if the sand is not his favorite terrain, Jeremy Seewer (Yamaha), particularly fit in this early 2022. Newcomer Maxime Renaux (Yamaha) is just as competitive and hungry as he is on this track, last year in MX2, showed that it did not concede anything to the opponents and reaffirmed who the World Champion was. Alessandro Lupino will be looking for redemption, who in England was not even able to complete a lap due to technical problems in his Beta, while Nicholas Lapucci will make his debut in the premier class with the Fantic XX 250 2T, winner of the EMX250 in 2021. Always staying in the “Italian home”, Alberto Forato (Gas Gas) will try to repeat the extraordinary weekend of Matterley Basin, this time in front of his audience.

MX2: Langenfelder surprise

The surprise of the first weekend of the year, but not too surprised seeing the feeling blossomed immediately with the Gas Gas De Carli team and the excellent winter spent together, is Simon Langenfelder, teammate of Mattia Guadagnini. If the German tries to replicate himself at the Italian’s home, Mattia for his part wants to put together a nice weekend after a decidedly subdued first round. Another very competitive team with two excellent drivers is Husqvarna Nestaan, with Road Van De Moosdijk not having happy memories of Mantua, linked to the Nations, while the minor Kay De Wolf is a candidate for the podium given his speed on the sand. . In all this, let’s not forget Tom Vialle (Ktm), who at Tazio Nuvolari has always said he is happy and likes this GP, and Jago Geerts (Yamaha), another who knows how to do his job on the sand like few others. . Top ten mission for Andrea Adamo (Gas Gas), but watch out for Kawasaki riders Mikkel Haarup and Kevin Horgmo. Thibault Benistant (Yamaha) is back in the race.

EMX250: powder fire

The championship also begins for the EMX250 riders and for the WMX girls: in the first category many new names, many young people who want to show off. Two to keep an eye on are the former Fantic Federico Tuani (Gas Gas SM Action) and Maximilian Spies (Ktm, winner of the EMX 2T in 2021), but Andrea Bonacorsi (Yamaha) can also play his cards, thanks to a year 2021 closed in crescendo and on the podium. Category debut for the winner of the EMX125 2021 Valerio Lata (Ktm Mrt), while Emilio Scuteri will bring the very Italian TM into the race. For the future it is necessary to write down the names of Sacha and Lucas Coenen, twins who have passed from the Kawasaki Bud team to Jumbo Husqvarna, while for the present the spotlight is on Cornelius Toendel, who amazed at the International Motocross of Italy 2022 in Sardinia, and Haakon Osterhagen, both Fantic pilots.

WMX: Fontanesi again mom

Courtney Duncan (Kawasaki) arrives at the first stage of the Women’s Motocross World Championship with the underdogs: not only is she the reigning champion, but during the season she will have to take into account one less opponent, because our Kiara Fontanesi will become a mother for the second time. A commitment, that of Kiara, which will not allow her to take part in the 2022 season, but which will give her the joy, strength and energy to come back stronger than before. So watch out for the “usual” Nancy Van de Ven (Yamaha), Shana Van der Vlist (Ktm), Amadine Verstappen (Kawasaki) and Larissa Papenmeier (Yamaha), all capable of achieving results. Representing Italy, among others, also Giorgia Montini, Elisa Galvagno and Giorgia Giudici, all on Husqvarna.
