Former goalkeeper Tuukka Rask, 36, recalled his tantrum that made headlines in 2009.
At the time, Rask represented the AHL team Providence Bruins, and the match against the Albany River Rats had progressed to a penalty shootout.
In the latest episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, Rask recalled how he had played the best match of his life. The Finn felt that not a single puck would pass him by.
However, in the penalty shootout, Jakub Petružálek got the puck behind Rask’s back, which tightened Rask’s surface.
Rask tried to push the puck off Petružálek’s platform, which caused the puck to slide backwards. However, the Czech player regained possession of the puck that had moved backwards and shot it into the goal.
The second attempt finally got Rask completely flustered.
– The guy shot the puck over my shoulder and I heard the crack of the top bar. The referee showed his hand to the center circle to signal a goal. It wasn’t a damn goal, Rask recalled in the episode.
– Then it clicked for me, Rask continued.
The Finn started hitting his stick on the top bar of the goal and against the side when leaving the rink. Rask also threw his stick on the ice.
Teammates didn’t say anything to Rask.
– It was probably quite good, because I could have beaten them too.
Rask said tantrums like that taught him a lot.
Rask ended his extensive playing career due to hip problems in 2022. During his career, he won, among other things, the Vezina Trophy awarded to the NHL’s best goaltender.
