Car editor Niek Schenk answers: ‘I checked this with the Road Traffic Department (RDW). This is about the type approval that determines whether a car may be allowed on the road. There are United Nations regulations for the design of cars, called UNECE, but no minimum surface area of the lamp unit is required for taillights and turn signals. However, the light from a direction indicator must be visible in an area of at least 12.5 square centimeters around the lamp.’
