Proud of his tenure
Stefan Kuntz reacted with disappointment to his departure as Turkey’s national coach. “One of my biggest dreams was to be on the sidelines as coach of the Turkish national team during the home European Championships in Germany – unfortunately that now remains just an unfulfilled dream,” the 60-year-old wrote in one Post on his own website and thanked the players, his coaching team and the fans for their support.
Kuntz had to resign after almost exactly two years and 20 games in which the former German U21 national coach collected an average of 1.95 points. Most recently, Turkey only played 1-1 in the European Championship qualifiers against outsiders Armenia – where they are ranked 42nd in the world rankings. in Group D they finished second behind Croatia with the same number of points – and lost 4-2 in a friendly against Japan.
Kuntz said he was proud of his work in Turkey. To support this, he listed numerous points such as reaching the playoffs for the World Cup in Qatar and promotion to the Nations League B, which was his goal when he took office. His team also has Salih Özcan (25; BVB) and Ferdi Kadioglu (23; Fenerbahce). ) convince people to change associations and discover and promote numerous young Turkish talents.
According to media reports, Kuntz’s successor will be the Italian Vincenzo Montella. “I wish the Turkish national team and especially the Turkish people that our successful work will continue and the team will qualify for the upcoming European Championships in Germany,” wrote Kuntz.
