The situation in Ukraine has shown that the UN Security Council needs to be reformed. About it declared Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu at a press conference after talks with his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi, Siyaset Canli reports.
“Recent events in our region have once again shown that the international system, primarily the UN Security Council, needs serious reform. We have agreed with Japan on this issue,” Cavusoglu said.
Russia vetoed UN resolution to end operation in Ukraine
On February 25, at an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, the member countries of the organization considered a UN resolution on ending the military operation in Ukraine. However, Russia vetoed and the resolution was not adopted.
Russia March 15 introduced UNSC’s own draft resolution calling for “a negotiated ceasefire to ensure the rapid, safe, voluntary and unhindered evacuation of all civilians, emphasizing the need for the parties concerned to agree on humanitarian pauses to this end.” However, later Russia itself suspended the vote, as Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said, due to the fact that “the West is forcing colleagues not to support the Russian resolution.”
