Finnish coach Tuomas Sammelvuo will pilot the Canadian men’s national volleyball team in the future. The national team informed about it on their website.
– I have seen the development of Canada during my years as a player and now as a coach. I have a lot of respect for what people have done here so far. I look forward to this challenge. I plan to bring my experience to the team and to the cooperation with other coaches so that we develop and ensure our success, Sammelvuo commented in the press release.
Canada is ranked 15th in the world in volleyball. At the Tokyo Olympics, it finished eighth.
The top coach has spent this season in Poland with the Zaksa club team. The team is currently fifth in the Polish league.
Before this, he coached in Russia for two years. Last season, he coached at Zenit St. Petersburg, but resigned from his position after Russia invaded Ukraine. Sammelvuo also piloted the Russian national volleyball team to Olympic silver in Tokyo.
Sammelvuo represented the Finnish national team as a player between 1993 and 2012. After his playing career, he jumped to become the head coach of the national team for the next six years, until coaching duties in Russia called.
