Madventures– journalist-presenter known from the travel program Tuomas “Tuna” Milonoff says on Monday Yle’s website in a published column about the severe burn out he experienced.

Milonoff reveals in his writing that the symptoms of burnout began insidiously and gradually worsened.

– My thoughts started to break off constantly. I couldn’t remember what I was saying in the middle of the conversation. I later learned that a significant decline in cognitive abilities is typical of those suffering from exhaustion, Milonoff writes in his column.

Docventures– program on Yelle together with Riku Rantala, Milonoff says that he started making an effort to appear normal on the outside. Even in work situations, he did everything he could so that the secret of burn out would not be revealed.

– I now admit that I have appeared on television to hundreds of thousands of people in an almost catatonic state, fearing that I will be caught at any moment, Milonoff writes.

– I suspected either a serious memory disorder or a gnawing deadly disease. I was afraid, but above all I was ashamed. I didn’t want to be weak.

Despite the symptoms, Milonoff did not quickly seek treatment, but tried to persevere. In the end, his wife and Rantala sent Milonoff on sick leave.

– I slept for the first three weeks until I noticed that exhaustion doesn’t go away even with excessively long naps. In the end, I couldn’t get anything done, many days I couldn’t even get out of bed. According to the doctor, my exhaustion had become serious.

Getting seriously sick with exhaustion has been an awakening experience for Milonoff.

– Due to long-term stress, my nervous system had remained in a chronic “fight or flight” mode. My body had forgotten how to recover. I was addicted to the stress hormone, cortisol. I conducted my work and life in a constant state of survival.

On Monday evening, on the Docventures broadcast in Yle Areena and TV2, the topic is Burn out. The guest in the discussion is the research professor of the Institute of Occupational Health Jari Hakanensocial psychologist and therapist Emilia Kujalaa professor Arto Olavi Salonen and a social media influencer Juuso “Herbalist” Karikuusi.
