Travel group TUI stops flights to Rhodes!
The German travel provider TUI no longer wants to bring holidaymakers to the island of Rhodes, which is affected by forest fires, in the coming days. A few flights are still planned – but they should not transport people to Rhodes, but should fly vacationers back from there, said a spokeswoman for the tourism group on Sunday. No new guests would be flown to Rhodes until Tuesday.
The TUI Group currently has around 40,000 guests on Rhodes, said the spokeswoman. “These include 7,800 who were affected by the fire and were evacuated to shelters or hotels.”
Forest fires are raging on the Greek holiday island
In the fight against the fire on Rhodes, which has been going on for days, the emergency services fear that strong winds will fan the flames further and thus hinder the extinguishing work.
The authorities warned on Sunday that the operation to contain the fire would take several more days. According to official information, around 30,000 people, including many vacationers, were brought to safety from the flames on Saturday.
