Tuchel to Leverkusen? Apparently there was once an offer

Thomas Tuchel was obviously in great demand right from the start of his career. Rudi Völler is said to have made him an offer.

Thomas Tuchel has no shortage of jobs at top clubs. The Bayern coach has already coached several top European teams. His stations include Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea FC. After his debut in Mainz, he almost moved to another German Bundesliga club, as is now being reported.

According to a report from Sport1.de, the Bild podcast “Bayern Insider” states that Bayer Leverkusen was said to have been interested in the coaching talent early on. Accordingly, the former sports director Rudi Völler asked the Mainz sports director Christian Heidel.

There are even said to have been direct talks between Tuchel and Leverkusen. There are reports of a meeting between the trainer and Völler at Frankfurt Airport. Apparently fans got wind of it and informed Mainz where Tuchel was still under contract. The move apparently failed due to the transfer fee.

Tuchel quit FSV Mainz in 2014 and went to Dortmund a year later. Two years later he won the DFB Cup with the club. After his stints abroad, he returned to Germany in 2023 and is now training the record champions.
