The Turkish first division club published a basic fee of 12.3 million euros as part of its stock exchange report. According to consistent reports, including bonuses, even 15 million euros could flow for the change. In total, Szalai would become the new Hoffenheim record purchase and replace the previous leader Diadié Samassékou.
Last year, Fenerbahce demanded 20 million euros for the Hungarian national player, who had a contract with the Süper Lig club until 2025 and who also had Hoffenheim’s league rivals Union Berlin and SC Freiburg.
The 19-time Turkish champions had put €2.2m on the table for Szalai in the January transfer window in 2021, whose market value at the time was €800,000. Since then, the defender has increased this to currently 14 million euros.
Hoffenheim signs Szalai: “Significantly increase competition”
“Attila is a type of player who combines unconditional toughness in tackles, tremendous header power and an unbelievable mentality. Decisive components, in other words, for which players like Benjamin Hübner and Ermin Bičakčić have stood above all in the recent past. As is well known, both are no longer part of our squad. It was therefore important to us to bring such a special type of player back to TSG. With this transfer, we will significantly increase the competition within the team,” explained TSG sports director Alexander Rosen and added:
“It is our clear goal to further stabilize our defense and Attila has already proven his qualities internationally. Regardless, fans can look forward to a great guy with wonderful charisma.”
