TSG Hoffenheim: Pellegrino Matarazzo before the end – historically bad start

Final against Hertha BSC

At the presentation of Pellegrino Matarazzo on February 8, Alexander Rosen, director of professional football at TSG Hoffenheim, said he was “convinced that he is the right man for the head coaching position”. Just over a month later, that conviction seems to have evaporated. Like both the “Picture” as well as sky report, the 45-year-old could be out of a job after just six games this weekend.

For TSG, which has slipped to 18th place in the table, the duel in the relegation battle against Hertha BSC is coming up on Saturday. The club from the capital is currently in 15th place with 21 points and could be overtaken if they win (to the table). In the event of a defeat, however, the gap would increase to five points, which is why those responsible in this scenario want to put new impetus on the coaching bench, according to the reports.

Matarazzo took over from André Breitenreiter in February, who, after a good start to the season and fourth place, fell into a negative run after ten games and failed to win nine league games in a row. The former Stuttgart coach should initiate the turnaround, but is still without a single point after five games. Only seven coaches have suffered six defeats at the start of a new club in Bundesliga history, most recently Mirko Slomka at Hannover 96 in 2010.

For Matarazzo, leaving TSG would be the second sacking this season. He sat on the bench for the first nine games of 2022/23 at VfB Stuttgart – there he scored five points and remained without a win.

TSG Hoffenheim: Ex-coach Markus Gisdol among candidates for Matarazzo successor

According to “Bild”, Hoffenheim has ex-coach Markus Gisdol on the list as a possible successor. The 53-year-old worked for the Kraichgauers between 2013 and 2015 and scored an average of 1.34 points in 96 games. Most recently, he was under contract with Lokomotiv Moscow until February 2022. In addition, a trail leads again to Kenan Kocak, who is said to have been the favorite of majority shareholder Dietmar Hopp when Matarazzo was hired.
