Tsegay becomes world champion over 5000 m

Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay won the 5000m title at the IAAF World Championships in Eugene.

The Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo won in 14:46.29 minutes ahead of Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet (14:46.75). Bronze also went to Ethiopia through Dawit Seyaum (14:47.36).

Olympic champion Sifan Hassan (Netherlands) had to settle for sixth place and thus remained without a medal, as she did in the 10,000 m (fourth place). The Kenyan Hellen Obiri, world champion in 2017 and 2019, was not at the start, she had won silver over 10,000 m.

The German top runner Konstanze Klosterhalfen (Leverkusen), who came third in the 2019 World Cup, was eliminated in the preliminary heat, as were Alina Reh (Berlin) and Sara Benfares (Rehlingen).
