Trump wants shutdown to turn off prosecutors’ money tap | Abroad

Former American President Donald Trump has called on Republicans in Congress to push for a shutdown, the paralysis of the national government. “This is the last chance to stop funding the political persecution against me and other patriots,” the Republican wrote on his messaging platform Truth Social.

The US is currently heading for such a shutdown. Congress and the administration have until September 30 to agree on a new budget. If that fails, all kinds of government services will no longer be able to spend money. This means that civil servants will no longer be paid and public institutions will have to close their doors.

The former president said Republicans in Congress have a duty to turn off the money tap from Democratic President Joe Biden and his administration. “They refuse to close the border and treat half the country as enemies of the state.”

Trump still has a lot of influence within the Republican Party. He is seen as the favorite to participate in next year’s presidential elections on behalf of the Republicans, despite his legal problems.

“Too extreme to ever trust”

American media write that a shutdown would not stop the lawsuits against Trump. The former president is being prosecuted in New York and Georgia, among other places. These cases fall under the legal systems of individual states and the prosecutors involved are not funded by the national government. Other criminal cases have been initiated by a special prosecutor under the Ministry of Justice, but there should also be no financial problems in the event of a shutdown.

The Democrats denounce Trump’s call. “Trump ordered Republicans in the House of Representatives to shut down the government,” wrote House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries. “These people are too extreme to ever trust.”
