Trump wants independent controller in FBI investigation into seized documents

Former US President Donald Trump wants an independent auditor to be appointed to the FBI’s investigation into documents seized from him. Monday he served for that a charge to a federal judge in Florida, asking the judge to suspend the investigation of the documents until a controller is appointed. The FBI has about 300 confidential documents that Trump had in its possession, according to The New York Times. One hundred and fifty of those documents were found by the FBI during the raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida two weeks ago.

In exceptional cases, an independent auditor can be appointed in the US to also go through seized documents and in this case to check whether the FBI is conducting its investigation correctly. Trump also wants him to get more details from the US Department of Justice about exactly what information the FBI holds. In addition, he wants to get back all documents that the security service should not have taken with them during the raid.

Among the documents that the FBI found with the former president, there is information about Trump’s presidential pardon to adviser Roger Stone and about French President Emmanuel Macron. The security service found several documents containing state secrets, which is why an investigation is currently underway into Trump for possible violation of the Espionage Act. The discovery of the first 150 documents early this year is said to have been a major reason for the raid on Trump’s Florida resort.
