US President Donald Trump has announced a large-scale partnership between tech companies to create computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI). At a joint press conference with the executives of software company Oracle, Japanese tech investor Softbank and OpenAI – the company behind ChatGPT – he announced that the project will be called ‘Stargate’.
Oracle, Softbank and OpenAI plan to jointly allocate $100 billion, but the project is also open to other investors. According to Trump, a total of at least $500 billion will be invested over the next four years. He said the project will create 100,000 jobs.
Large data centers and power plants are needed for Stargate. The first data centers will be located in Texas and are already under construction. According to Oracle founder Larry Ellison, expansion at other locations is also being considered.
The project will include AI that will analyze medical records and help doctors treat their patients, Ellison said.
The executives of Oracle, Softbank and OpenAI credited Trump for the initiative, but according to Reuters the project appears to be an update of an earlier plan by OpenAI and Microsoft that was also called ‘Stargate’.
