It is unclear exactly how many of the documents found at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort were classified, according to The Washington Post. Earlier, the paper revealed that the Justice Department has launched an investigation after filing officials secured 15 boxes of paperwork in Mar-a-Lago last month. That while Trump was no longer allowed to have official documents in his possession after his term in office.
The Washington Post writes that the top secret classification is applied only to documents that “could cause exceptionally serious damage to national security if improperly disclosed.” A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice does not want to say anything about the investigation to the newspaper. A Trump spokesperson accused the anonymous sources of “spreading fake news.” According to him, there is only talk of a “routine process.”
According to experts, it is not clear what the consequences will be for Trump if it is determined that he has indeed handled the documents incorrectly, because no ex-president has yet been prosecuted for it.
