Much is known about the wintering of Willem Barentsz and his crew on Nova Zembla. We know from the diaries of a junior officer on board, Gerrit de Veer, that these seafarers got stuck in the ice during their voyage ‘around the North’ at the end of the 16th century and that they built a shelter called Het Behouders Huys. .
