Truck crashes into pedestrians in Bavaria: mother (37) and daughter (11) died, son (9) also among the injured | Abroad

UpdateA truck has hit a group of pedestrians in southern Germany. According to authorities, a 37-year-old woman was killed. His 11-year-old daughter later died in hospital. Three people were also injured.

Among the injured is the 9-year-old son and brother of the two fatalities. It is not clear how bad he is. A 70-year-old woman is in bad shape. Investigation shows that there was probably an accident, the police say.

According to police, the 63-year-old truck driver was on his way to a delivery when he drove onto the sidewalk of a shopping street to avoid a parked bus. He hit several people and eventually came to rest against a wall. The police could not yet say how fast the truck was traveling at the time of the collision.

The driver was treated in hospital for his injuries and was subsequently arrested by police. A police spokeswoman indicated that it was initially unclear whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The incident took place in Passau, Bavaria. That city, with approximately 50,000 inhabitants, is located on the border with Austria.
