Maurice Steijn does not yet know whether he can call on Steven Berghuis, Branco van den Boomen, Benjamin Tahirovic and Devyne Rensch in Ajax’s away match against FC Utrecht on Sunday. “These are all doubtful cases. We hope that they will be recovered on Sunday,” he said on his club’s website. Silvano Vos is missing due to a suspension.
Steijn says he has seen good things during the international match. “The international period was good for me and the staff. We trained with a small group, because most of the people were away. I watched many matches of us, FC Utrecht and our internationals. I saw great things there and that is positive “They all played a lot of minutes.”
FC Utrecht against Ajax is a match between number 18 and number 16 of the Eredivisie. Under the leadership of Steijn, Ajax has never started the competition so poorly, with only 5 points from six matches. FC Utrecht is also experiencing the worst start to the season in club history, with 7 defeats in eight matches.
‘Traditionally difficult’
“FC Utrecht-out is a beautiful, but traditionally difficult match,” says Steijn. “They are having a hard time, just like us. I expect a tough duel at the cutting edge. Both teams need a win.”

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has temporarily resigned from his duties at Ajax. The technical manager has a burnout and is at home sick, a spokesperson for the club from the capital confirms.
Huntelaar extended his contract in June until mid-2027. In recent months, he has mainly been busy with Jong Ajax and the highest youth teams of the club from Amsterdam. He had no say in the twelve purchases of the now dismissed director of football affairs Sven Mislintat.
Dismissal Mislintat
After Mislintat’s dismissal, Huntelaar took over some tasks from the German. This became visible to the supporters of the current number 16 of the Eredivisie when he said goodbye to Jurriën Timber, who had left for Arsenal, on the field just before the home match against Feyenoord.
