“Sanction is inevitable”
Schalke professional Thomas Ouwejan has been suspended from training with the second division professionals for the coming week because of his behavior after his early substitution in the 3:5 (0:3) defeat at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Instead, the full-back should train with the regional league team in the coming days. The 27-year-old Dutchman was also fined, the amount of which the second division club did not provide any further details on Sunday.
Ouwejan was substituted along with Lino Tempelmann and Dominick Drexler in the 33rd minute on Saturday evening when the score was 0-3. He then refused coach Karel Geraerts the usual handshake and caused an argument on the sidelines. “I understand that people sometimes react incorrectly out of emotion, but it should never be disrespectful,” emphasized the coach and added: “Respect for the club, the fans, the teammates and the staff is very important to me. Therefore, I cannot accept this behavior and this sanction is inevitable.”
“Respect for the club, the fans, the teammates and the staff is very important to me. That’s why I cannot accept this behavior and this sanction is inevitable,” Geraerts said on Sunday. According to the club, Ouwejan apologized to Schalke’s sporting management on Saturday. Sports director André Hechelmann was still angry on Sunday. “If a player behaves like this after such a poor team performance, then it shows that he has not understood the situation we are in,” complained Hechelmann.
