Attention sunbathers: there are also plenty of ‘tropical spots’ close to home. Take, for example, the island of De Schelp between Naarden and Almere. Two artificial islands that skillfully keep the wind out, creating a pleasant temperature. “It quickly gets very hot here,” says Edo Rosenbaum.
Edo, 78, has been passionately managing the island for seventeen years. “I love this island, I used to come here myself with my own children,” he says on the way to the island. “I had my own business and a customer told me that the municipality of Naarden was looking for a manager. Then I went to look and finally do it.”
Edo has now become an integral part of the island. He visits the island for 180 days every year and can be reached for 365 days. He has partly compiled his tasks himself and mainly consists of enjoying and cleaning up toilet paper. “Yes, we don’t have a toilet here, so if you must”, he half-closes his sentence.
Gooie Islands ?️
☀️ In this mini-series ‘Gooise Eilanden’, NH Nieuws tours islands around and in ‘t Gooi. Both in the Randmeren and the IJmeer and Gooimeer, as well as in the Loosdrechtse Plassen and even in the Vecht. Several episodes can be found online in the coming weekends and can be seen on NH Gooi.
According to regular visitors to the island, a lot has changed positively since Edo became the manager: “At first I was really shocked, but soon I realized that he understood how it had to be done. Now it is a lot cleaner and more pleasant here than then.” .” That does mean that there might be a problem if Edo stops. “I’m already 78 years old,” Edo also understands. “But as long as I stay fit and I keep enjoying it, I’ll definitely keep doing it.”
