Tribute to Elizabeth: rhino cub named Queenie | animals

A rhinoceros baby born in Cotswold Wildlife Park, in southern England, has been given the name Queenie to celebrate Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II’s jubilee. She will be on the throne for 70 years this year.

“All rhinoceroses are named after special personalities, and I think everyone will agree that 2022 will be special forever because of the platinum reign of Queen Elizabeth II,” said the director of the Cotswold Zoo. “I thought it was a bit snooty to call her Elizabeth, so it became Queenie.”

For that anniversary, four days of festivities are planned in early June, with a military parade, a big concert and picnics all over the country.

The British monarch will turn 96 next month, but she has had health problems in recent months. It was announced Friday that she will not participate in a Commonwealth ceremony in London. She was long expected to reappear in public after months there.
