The German mixed relay won gold at the Triathlon World Championships in Hamburg. Tim Hellweg, Annika Koch, Simon Henseleit and Laura Lindemann prevailed on Sunday over 4x 300 m swimming, 7.0 km cycling and 1.75 km running ahead of New Zealand and Switzerland.
The German quartet, who last won the World Cup relay in 2013, needed 1:22:08 hours – at that time with the later Ironman world champions Anne Haug and Jan Frodeno, among others.
“It was super nice, it couldn’t be any better,” said final runner Lindemann on the ARD microphone after she had already set a first highlight with the bronze medal in the sprint on Saturday.
Thanks to the home triumph, the winning team secured the Golden Ticket for the 2024 Olympics. This means that two German starting places in Paris are fixed for both men and women.
Starting runner Hellwig (Neustadt/Weinstraße), who finished eighth in the individual race on Saturday, passed third in a leading group of three (Australia, Portugal, Germany) to Annika Koch, fourth in the individual race. The woman from Saarbrücken was even able to pull away and hand over a small lead of three seconds to Simon Henseleit.
The man from Nuremberg, who missed the final the day before and therefore had one race less in his legs, kept up with New Zealander Taylor Reid, so that final runner Laura Lindemann jumped into the water at the same time as Nicole van der Kaay. But already in the Alster, the Potsdamer was able to distance her competitor and kept the lead on the bike and running course.
The DTU juniors also won gold
The DTU U23 juniors had already won the gold medal on Saturday. The quartet Henry Graf (Darmstadt), Julia Böcker (Bad Oldesloe), Eric Diener (Freiburg) and Tanja Neubert (Erlangen) won after 1:25:02 hours ahead of Italy (1:25:10) and New Zealand (1:25: 45).
