Bayreuth triathlete Anne Haug has won the classic Challenge Roth for the second time. It was only when she ran that she took the lead. An insect bite caused a stir at the bike race.
The 2021 winner is also celebrating this year: Anne Haug from Bayreuth won the triathlon classic in Middle Franconia for the second time. However, the road to victory at Challenge Roth 2022 was a rocky one: Haug was only able to take the lead in the final marathon. During the cycle race, Haug was stung on the neck, presumably by a bee, and had to cool the affected area several times during the race.
Haug far back while swimming
As is often the case in triathlon competitions, Haug was well behind the leaders after swimming. The leading group was already missing more than seven minutes. “The fact that the gap is so big: That speaks more to the fact that she is struggling a bit and that physical performance is lacking,” analyzed the currently injured triathlete Sebastian Kienle at BR24 Sport.
Marathon decision
But Haug presented himself in top form. The race to catch up with the fastest swimmer, Brit Fenella Langridge, began when she switched to cycling. She reduced the gap to 5:32 minutes by the time she switched to the running track. In the final marathon, she finally overtook Langridge and secured victory.
