Ironman Frankfurt on June 26th

When is the longest sports day of the year? On June 26th – and thus, as before the pandemic, on the last Sunday in June. Last year the Ironman Frankfurt was due to Corona been postponed to August, 2020 the race had to be canceled completely. The competition still bears the addition “European Championship”, after all, the next European champion is mainly sought among the male professionals.

Special anniversary for the Ironman

The Ironman Frankfurt is going into its 20th edition this year and is thus celebrating a special anniversary. The first race took place on August 18, 2002, when three Germans, Lothar Leder, Jürgen Zäck and Uwe Widmann, finished in the first three places. Also in the following years there was a lot of black, red and gold on the podium, between 2014 and 2019 Sebastian Kienle and Jan Frodeno each won the race three times.

In the women’s category, where the European Championship title is no longer awarded in Frankfurt, German and international winners alternated. Nina Kraft, Sandra Wallenhorst and the two Swiss athletes Caroline Steffen and Daniela Ryf each won the Ironman Frankfurt twice.

The track at the Ironman Frankfurt

3.8 kilometers of swimming, 182 kilometers of cycling, 42.2 kilometers of running: it’s no wonder that the word “long” is included in the term long-distance triathlon. After an extended lap through the Langener Waldsee, the athletes switch to a 90-kilometer bike course, which leads through parts of Frankfurt and the Wetterau and is ridden twice. The final marathon extends over a so-called loop along both banks of the Main in Frankfurt City and has to be completed four times – up to the longed-for finish line on the Römerberg.

Contract extended: The Ironman stays in Frankfurt

Even before the starting gun is fired early on Sunday morning, one thing is clear: The 20th edition of the Ironman Frankfurt will by no means be the last. At the end of May it became known that the organizer and the city extended the contract for their cooperation. This makes it clear: This traditional long-distance triathlon will remain in the Main metropolis until at least 2026.
