Triathlete Lindemann sprints to bronze at the World Championships

The German top triathlete Laura Lindemann won the bronze medal at the Supersprint World Championships in Hamburg. In the final in front of thousands of spectators at the Binnenalster, the 27-year-old Berliner was only beaten by Cassandre Beaugrand from France and Beth Potter from Britain.

“I’m doing super well with it, it was a super good race, even if I had heavy legs at the end,” said Lindemann on ARD, “but probably everyone had them.” In the final, Lindemann had led after the swim, then went on to the final run in sixth place. With an energy performance, it was finally enough for third place.

After three runs of 300 m swimming, 7.5 km cycling and 1.75 km running, in which the field was reduced from 30 over 20 to ten people, two more German athletes ended up in the top 5. Annika Koch was fourth, Marlene Gomez-Göggel finished right behind.

The German champion Lisa Tertsch received a time penalty in the first lap before cycling because of an unfastened chin strap on her helmet. It was only enough for 23rd place – the end for the woman from Offenbach.

In the men’s race, Tim Hellwig was the only German to reach the final of the top ten and finished eighth. “There was nothing in the last lap. It’s the toughest format I know. In the end I’m satisfied,” said the 24-year-old.

Olympic bronze medalist Hayden Wilde from New Zealand secured victory in an impressive manner ahead of Portuguese Vasco Vilasca and Briton Alex Yee. Norway’s Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt finished fourth empty-handed.

At the end on Sunday, the mixed relay will be about the medals. There, the German quartet is one of the favorites. The Super Sprint World Championship is also part of the year-round World Championship Series.
