Trial setup Kortrijk will be finalized

Where the Oudenaardsesteenweg meets the entrances and exits of the E17 and R8, several accidents have already occurred in the past. It is often not clear to motorists whether vehicles want to drive from the roundabout cowboy Henk towards E17 or towards R8.

That is why a test setup was launched at the end of 2021. With the yellow posts, the Agency for Roads and Traffic is scrapping one of the two lanes. That remains the case now. There will be only 1 lane, from the roundabout towards Kortrijk. Traffic coming from the E17 gives priority to cyclists and cars on the Oudenaardsesteenweg.

Work in three phases

In order to limit disruption as much as possible, the works will be carried out in three phases. The first phase of the works will start on September 11. Then the Oudenaardsesteenweg towards the center of Kortrijk will be closed. There will be serious disruption to traffic to and from the E17.

Cyclists follow a diversion via Oudenaardsesteenweg, Luipaardstraat, Guldenspoorpad, Populierenlaan and Kapel Ter Bede. Motorized traffic from the E17 from Lille detours via Oudenaardsesteenweg (N8 and N391), Beneluxlaan, Kanaalstraat, Visserskaai and Ringlaan (R8) to Oudenaardsesteenweg. Traffic from the E17 from Ghent travels via the Ringlaan (R8), Visserskaai and the Ringlaan to the Oudenaardsesteenweg.

To complete the works, asphalting work is also required, which will be carried out in phase 2 and phase 3. These phases will be carried out in two separate weekends, also with disruption to traffic from the E17. According to the current schedule, the works will last until mid-October.

Bicycle safety

Bicycle safety will also increase during the works. “The bicycle crossings will be wider and will be located between raised central islands,” says Lydia Peeters, Flemish Minister for Mobility. “The cycle path towards the center will be moved behind the existing canal.”
