Trial against Boris Becker for delaying insolvency begins

Tennis legend Boris Becker will be on trial in London from Monday (11:00 a.m. CET) for delaying bankruptcy.

The German is said to have embezzled assets and failed to comply with information obligations in insolvency proceedings in his adopted home of Great Britain. He faces up to seven years in prison.

A bankruptcy court in London declared the three-time Wimbledon champion insolvent in June 2017 due to outstanding debts. At the time, his outstanding debts were estimated at up to £50 million (€59 million).

The process of delaying bankruptcy was supposed to start last September, but was postponed because Becker changed his team of lawyers. First, the jury is to be sworn in at Southwark Crown Court.

Becker rejects the allegations made against him. At a court hearing in October 2020, he pleaded not guilty to all 28 counts. His attorney at the time said Becker was determined to quash the allegations and restore his reputation.
