A stroll through Prenzlauer Berg gives an idea of how serious the situation in the catering industry is. When potential guests are turned away from the pub before 10 p.m. on a warm summer evening, landlords must be really desperate.
“Sorry, the kitchen is already closing”, was the motto around the Helmholtzplatz several times over the weekend. The streets were still full of tourists and Berliners.
Luckily there is not only a free table in front of the Tres, but also Spanish hospitality: “You are welcome to take a seat, our kitchen is still open!”
I choose “Iberico y Queso” (16.50 euros) as a starter – a ham and cheese platter. From the very first bite, it’s clear why Iberian ham is considered one of the best in the world: great flavor! The cheese is no different. My main course: Solomillo de Ternera (29 euros) – beef fillet with pepper cream sauce and vegetables. So tender!
The waiters scurry from table to table and the innkeeper always has an eye on the well-being of his guests. When a young couple lights up a joint on the terrace and thick smoke wafts to the other tables, he is there immediately. As friendly as he is determined, he demands: “Please turn that off!” The request is granted without protest. A perfect evening can go on.
Lychener Straße 30, Prenzlauer Berg, daily from 5 p.m. to midnight.
