tree crash! Life-threatening racer escape ends with arrest

A BMW racer was in a chase with the police late Thursday evening around 10:15 p.m. in Berlin-Marzahn.

The man had driven his car through a red traffic light on Landsberger Allee in Lichtenberg out of town. When a police patrol wanted to check him because of this, he accelerated and drove away at high speed.

After a few minutes, according to initial information, the man turned his car in a cul-de-sac at the tram depot and drove back in the direction of the city in oncoming traffic – further pursued by the patrol car: via Landsberger Allee, Blumberger Damm and numerous side streets.

In addition, the tree threatened to fall on the overhead line of the tram, as a police spokesman said on Friday night. The fire brigade had to saw off the trunk. Landsberger Allee and tram traffic in the east of the city were only accessible to a limited extent for the duration of the rescue.

It was initially unclear why the man fled from the police patrol. The police are still checking whether he may have been drinking alcohol and whether the license plates on his vehicle were stolen.
