Travis Scott awards $1 million in grants

That the US has a problem with extremely unequally distributed educational opportunities has should be known. Many of the best-known and most sought-after universities are privately organized and attract not only with good teaching, but also with the networks that students can make on campus. When it comes to admission, it is not primarily the talent of the applicant that is decisive, but rather the wealth of the parents. Can they afford to send their children to the country’s elite universities? Or any at all?

Travis Scott advocates for African American students

Above all, African Americans, who still suffer from structural discrimination and have a lower average income than white Americans, struggle with unequal educational opportunities. US rapper Travis Scott tries to support these people. For this he already founded a foundation in 2020, which he founded after his grandfather Cactus Jack. This particularly supports African-American young people in Houston, the rapper’s hometown. Now, Travis Scott has announced that he is providing $1 million in scholarships for African American students. The rapper is quoted as saying:

“In every Black household, excellence abounds but unfortunately not enough opportunity – and Black students are left behind or forgotten. My family and I want to change that. Congratulations to 100 scholarship recipients this year. I know we’ll be hearing great things from them – and we’re already expanding our work next year.”

The rapper has not released any music this year and his current solo album ASTROWORLD was released almost four years ago. In 2021, a stampede at Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival left at least eight dead and hundreds injured. After that, allegations were made against the rapper that he had not taken sufficient security measures and only stopped his concert 37 minutes after the first reports of collaborating people.
