Traveling in the summer: is it cheaper by train or by car?

From 21 June 2023, with the solstice ofsummer, we have officially entered the hottest months of the year characterized, in most cases, by periods of rest, travel and therefore transfers. In this sense, Italy offers various options both in terms of geography and experience. But to get around it is better to use thecar or train? We calculated the price of the journeys, departing from Rome or from Milanto four tourist locations in our country: Vernazza (Liguria, Cinque Terre), Riccione (Emilia Romagna), Gallipoli (Puglia) And Tropea (Calabria). As far as car travel is concerned, we calculated the average costs based on fuel consumption in the combined cycle of one Fiat 500X diesel it’s a Volkswagen Golf on petrol, two very common cars in the Italian circulating fleet. The former is capable of traveling 21.7 kilometers per litre, while the latter boasts an autonomy of 20.8 km/L. The fuel price taken as a reference is that of the weekly survey Put (The Ministry of Economic Development) on 12 June 2023; as regards the toll, however, we calculated the price on the official portal Highways for Italy. For travel by train we have taken into consideration the costs of the high speed train Trenitalia and of Italian (in the routes in which it is present, guaranteeing the service, and including the price of any changes that may include non-high-speed routes), indicating the ticket prices to reach the chosen locations in two different periods: end of June And end of July. We have chosen the rates lowest available among the options with average journey times for the single section. The reference time slot is between 10 and 15, one of the most comfortable in which to leave.
