Google, the subsidiary of Alphabet, stores less data in Google accounts with its navigation app. If you no longer want to be followed at every turn, you can activate this mode. Incognito mode is also known to many as private mode in the various browsers. However, even this has its limits.
This is what the new incognito mode does
Normally, the map service stores a lot of information about its users. This includes, among other things, places and shops that were searched for, but also routes that were driven. It’s no secret that Google likes to collect as much data as possible and is part of the Internet giant’s business model. In some cases, however, you as a user can benefit from it. For example, Google Maps automatically provides information about traffic problems on the way to work. In addition, the various Google services exchange information with other apps, which enables personalized advertisements.
Incognito mode now ensures that search histories are not saved. Also, the geo information is not used for location history and shared location. For example, if you share your whereabouts with someone, you can move around unnoticed while the mode is activated. In addition, the US company promises not to use this data to display personalized results. However, the mode does not prevent the provider or other Google services from continuing to use information from Google Maps. It only prevents information about your own activities from being visible in the Google account and in the app.
Enable incognito mode for Google Maps
The mode is available both in the apps for Android smartphones and in the Apple App Store. That’s how it works:
1. Open the Google Maps app
2. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner
3. Tap Turn on incognito mode
Users can see whether it worked by looking at the black status bar within the app, among other things. In addition, the usually blue navigation point is colored black. Switching between incognito and standard mode is possible at any time.
